WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN AN RMT COLLECTS PERSONAL HEALTH INFORMATION

The CMTO Standard of Practice ensures Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) only collect the Personal Health Information (PHI) necessary to provide safe and effective care. Massage Therapy is a clinical healthcare treatment—this standard protects you by ensuring questions are relevant, explained clearly, and non-discriminatory.

📋 What Your RMT WILL Ask

Before starting treatment or during regular health updates, your RMT must collect basic clinical details:

  • Basic Details: Your full name, age, contact info, emergency contact, allergies, and physician/referring practitioner (if applicable).
  • Care Needs: Your language preferences, mobility/accessibility needs, and reason(s) for seeking treatment.
  • Health Updates: Any changes to your health or treatment history since your last visit.

🚫 What Your RMT WILL NOT Ask

Your RMT will never ask for unnecessary personal details:

  • Unrelated personal life, dating, or relationship details.
  • Medical or health conditions that have no impact on Massage Therapy treatment.

🩺 What Your RMT MAY Ask (If Relevant to Treatment)

Depending on your health status, your RMT may ask focused questions to ensure treatment is safe for you:

  • Pain & Injuries: Recent strains, joint issues, areas of discomfort, or increased pressure sensitivity.
  • Medications: Pain relievers, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, or medications affecting sensation.
  • Health Conditions: Pregnancy, cardiovascular/heart conditions, immune dysfunction, or other factors impacting safe care.

🛡️ Your Rights & What You Can Expect From Your RMT

Your RMT is required to:

  1. Clearly Explain: Tell you why specific information is needed and answer any questions you have.
  2. Tailor Their Approach: Collect information using sensitive, non-judgmental language via your preferred method (verbal, paper form, or online portal).
  3. Respect Your Choice: Honor your right to give, refuse, or withdraw consent to share certain information at any time.

Privacy & Confidentiality: All personal health information collected by your RMT is kept strictly confidential and securely stored in accordance with the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
